AK Ruddock • Portfolio
These are the works of AK Ruddock. Usually, this is where an artist statement goes; and it will, but please bear with me. Artists love to speak in jargon & big words that make them feel smart. We can do that here too! I love to gab about Deleuze and Guttari and Gertrude Stein and Harry Who and Derrida as much as the next person. But as artists, do we never tire of the sound of our own voices? I'd like this introduction to make sense to anyone reading it. So for now we'll put away the verbal prowess that The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2013-17) & The Reinwardt Academy (2018-20) instilled in me, in favor of a more fun approach.
All that said, it's nice to meet you. I come from Northeastern Ohio, born and raised. I've spent significant time in Chicago, Amsterdam, and New York (with a foray out west). I currently live and make things in Brooklyn. My works range through many mediums, but I mainly consider myself a drawer & printmaker. Sometimes these works have to do with language, writing, and complicated communication: Sometimes, they don't! Sometimes they're locations, and others far off dream spaces. Sometimes they have to do with my invisible illnesses; others they have to do with my amazement at bodies in motion. Sometimes they have to do with teeny tiny things like cells and mold; others they have to do with escaping all those things all together. Ever notice how sometimes things look like bodies but they aren't? Like the clouds or shapes in the water- funny, ain't it? Sometimes, my works are just what comes out of my hands that day. And that's the way it works for us all, isn't it?
Thank you for stopping by. I hope you laugh at some, I hope you cry at others. Enjoy.
