1851 The Astronomer
This is a dramatic & stately portrait engraving of an Astronomer deep in thought. Over his textbook and quill pot, he contemplates the stars and dark unknown of thee skies above him. A constellatory globe sits beside him indicating the cosmos which he ponders.
This piece was engraved in 1851 by Robert Bell, after the original larger painting by Henry Wyatt "The Astronomer". According to its original blurb, (included with the listing) this painting was displayed originally in the 1830's under the title "The Philosopher" or "Galileo" as well. It includes a wonderful description of his painting and sketching style, and how the feel of the piece translates to this engraving. It was printed & published by Virtue & Co in London and originally found in the publication, The Art Jounrnal.
The print measures 9 x 13 inches and is in excellent condition. It includes the original accompanying text from The Art Journal which has been saved in perfection with the print. It would make a beautiful addition to any space lover or scientist's collection!
