This piece is an immaculately-kept B&W print which shows the historic landing of Hendrick Hudson in 1609. The image is based on the original painting by Robert W. Weir of the Hudson Valley School of artistry, and was originally engraved & printed in 1857. Hudson was an early explorer & sea farer of the world. After failing to find the Northwest Passage a few times before, he was sent by the Dutch again to sail West in search of Eastern Asia or Terra Nova. Instead, he happened upon what would one day become America, New York, & the Hudson Valley. It shows Hudson & his landing party anchoring ashore with the Dutch flag waving above on the Hudson River, while their main ship the Half Moon floats in the background. Native American tribespeople welcome them and canoe out to meet them, as relations at the beginning were peaceful with the original inhabitants of this country. Beyond it shows the majestic beauty of the Hudson Valley with a hilly and forested landscape around the river in fine detail.
This was originally published & printed in New York by Martin, Johnson & Company, 1857. The page overall measures slightly less than 11" wide x 7.5" tall (27.5 x 18.75cm) with a beautiful, delicate colophon containing the title & publishing information. Condition is Excellent, with no discoloring, added tints, or folds. Incredible piece of history for your Hudson Valley home, vacation property, or the New York history lover in your life.
